Otavalo market is considered one the biggest and
best
Indian markets in
all
the handicrafts that are made in

head north along the

Calderon to see the bread figures and Cayambe

taste the typical ‘biscochos’ (local biscuits).
After
you have explored the Otavalo market,
we
go to t the leather market at Cotacachi or Cuicocha
but
any other day is still interesting, and has less tourist.

is a full-day tour, leaving at approximately 8AM any day.

to Cotopaxi Volcano, 5897m, the highest active

in the world. We visit a museum in the park

hike around a lagoon at the bottom of
the volcano

then continue by car up the volcano to the
parking lot, at over 4500m . then we walk approximately
1.5hrs
to the refuge at 4800m, and after shortbread,
continue to the glacier if the weather holds out).

head back to the
lunch
somewhere near Latacunga , or buy a box lunch
on
the way to have more time in the park. Return to

To

DEVIL’ S NOSE TRAIN

Day
1: drive south to the Cotopaxi Volcano. We head
to
the Pan-American highway to have lunch near
Latacunga and then continue south, arriving in
Riobamba.We spend the night there in a basic hotel.
Day
2: get up at 5:30am for breakfast. We need to be
at
the train station at 6:15am in order to get the best
place
on the roof of the train. The train takes approx.
5
hours to get to Alausi and the Devil’s nose
once
the train ride has finished, a car will be waiting
for
you with your bags to return to

hours drives to the east are the Termas de Papallacta.
They
are located on the Cinnamon trail, (65km from
which
is the same route that Francisco de Orellana took in
1542 when

River. We take a short cut, passing by the
Guajalo and have a wonderful ride in the paramo (tundra).

highest point reached is 4150m. we descend to a

GUAGUA PICHINCHA

This immense
volcano which stands guard over the city has
a
long history of eruptions. There are several
peaks
which attest to this.

well to the west of the city and is considered by

to be non-threatening to the city Some believe

Guagua from el Cinto

The
eruption cloud in October 1999

When Guagua revived in October 1999 several of the

caused volcanic ash to fall on the city.
The
airport was closed and flights diverted on several
occasions.
Hundreds of people were employed to
sweep
the runway clear of the corrosive ashes and
people
in the city swept their roofs clear too.

Height
Access to the volcano was
closed for many months,
but
restrictions have now been lifted. We leave
early
in the morning and drive to El Cinto where we
can
appreciate spectacular views of the valley of the
volcanoes
and of the Lloa valley.
The
climb to the summit is definitely non-technical

affords great views of the fumerolic activity in the
Crater
floor. Descent into the crater is strictly forbidden.
We
drive up through the agricultural area to the
higher
slopes of the volcano. We leave the jeep
in
the high meadows and hike up to the refuge,
from
the refuge which belongs to Civil Defense
we
hike to the crater rim and then on the summit
at
47904m.
We
normally do this trip as part of acclimatization
program,
but for those who what to simply look into
the
crater and learn a little geology and about the flora
and
fauna, we can drive to the refuge and then we will
visit
the Panecillo on our return to

HIGH SIERRA
